Here John is questioned by the most important, powerful, and influential people of his day. People who could take him places, open doors, expand his ministry, make him famous, make him successful. Man’s wisdom would say, “grab the opportunity!”, “claim your position!”, “become someone!”. But no, John did not claim any credit, no honor, no title. He chose humility. He chose to stay just an unnamed voice in the wilderness doing the simple will of God day by day.
Think about what John gave up! He could have used his call to build a name, a following! But he didn’t. Instead, what happened? God honored John in an unfathomable way! John baptized Jesus! Whoa! What greater honor could there be? John chose humility and was rewarded by one of the highest honors of all time.
We would do good to remain humble. Reject man’s wisdom, reject pride and power, reject praising yourself. Instead just do our job and let God honor who He will. We each have a calling, let us be wise to find that calling and then be content in the humility of walking in it.
God had greater things planned for John than a title, than recognition of man. God planned on John having a part in the revealing of the Gospel itself to the world even yet to come!
And God has a plan for you.
Do what you know, for today. Be content in today’s mission. Relax! God has a plan for you, a plan to be revealed in good time. All we must do is be faithful in our mission for today, and stay humble.
Be the voice, the tool, the conduit of God’s power to a lost and hurting world, one day at a time.
